Where are you on the scale?
Pick the pattern closest to yours. You'll see the typical graft range and how a case like it is usually approached.
Norwood 1
No significant recession. A juvenile or mature hairline.
- Typical grafts
- None indicated
- Usual approach
- No transplant. If you are noticing early shedding, medical treatment protects what you have and is far cheaper than surgery later.
Norwood 2
Slight recession at the temples; the hairline is starting to lift at the corners.
- Typical grafts
- 1,100 – 1,800
- Usual approach
- Temple and hairline work — commonly a single FUE or DHI session, with medical treatment alongside to hold the rest.
Norwood 3
Deep, symmetrical recession at both temples — the classic M shape. The first stage considered clinically significant.
- Typical grafts
- 1,700 – 2,700
- Usual approach
- A defined hairline rebuild. FUE harvesting with DHI placement at the front is a common plan at this stage.
Norwood 4
Temple recession deepens and a separate thinning area appears at the crown, with a band of hair between them.
- Typical grafts
- 2,300 – 3,500
- Usual approach
- Front plus early crown. Usually one larger FUE session; occasionally split across two days to protect the grafts.
Norwood 5
Both areas enlarge; the band separating front from crown narrows and thins.
- Typical grafts
- 2,800 – 4,100
- Usual approach
- Priorities matter here: the front first, crown second. Donor supply decides how much of both is realistic.
Norwood 6
The front and crown have merged into one bald area; hair remains at the sides and back.
- Typical grafts
- 3,200 – 4,700
- Usual approach
- High graft counts. FUT or a combined harvest is often the efficient route, staged across sessions.
Norwood 7
The most advanced pattern: a narrow horseshoe of hair around the sides and back.
- Typical grafts
- 3,600 – 5,200
- Usual approach
- Donor supply is the limit. Realistic coverage goals, staged sessions, and often SMP for the appearance of density.
Indicative only. The Norwood scale describes pattern, not donor supply, and only an examination can set a graft count.

Common questions
How do I choose a hair transplant clinic in Jaipur?
Choose a clinic where a qualified surgeon examines your scalp, tells you which options suit you — including when surgery does not — and gives you a written plan and total cost before you commit. Ask who will perform the extraction and implantation, look at before-and-after photographs of patients whose hair loss is similar to yours, and check what follow-up is included. At DR HAIR® India the consultation is free and is with Dr. Jai Bansal, at Mansarovar in Jaipur or Rajouri Garden in Delhi.
Where is the hair taken from for a hair transplant?
Hair is usually taken from the back and sides of your own scalp, because those follicles are generally resistant to pattern hair loss. If scalp donor hair is limited, hair from the beard or chest can sometimes be added, although body hair grows less predictably once transplanted. Only your own follicles are transplanted; synthetic fibre implants are a different procedure with a high risk of infection and rejection, and are widely discouraged.
How long does it take to recover from a hair transplant?
Most people go home the same day and are back at desk work within a few days to a week. Swelling, redness and tenderness are common for the first few days, and the small scabs on the grafts usually fall away within 7 to 10 days. FUT takes a little longer to heal than FUE because the donor area is stitched.
How much does a hair transplant cost in India?
At DR HAIR® India a hair transplant generally costs around ₹30,000 to ₹1,50,000, depending mainly on the number of grafts you need. The graft count depends on how much hair you have lost and the area to be covered, and the technique (FUE, FUT or DHI) also affects the price. You are given a total figure in writing after your scalp has been examined, before you commit to anything.
How successful is hair transplant surgery?
For suitable candidates with a well-planned procedure, most transplanted grafts grow and the result is usually long-lasting, but outcomes vary between individuals. Success depends on your donor supply, the pattern and stage of your hair loss, the surgeon's planning and technique, and aftercare. Transplanted follicles are generally resistant to pattern hair loss, but the native hair around them can keep thinning, so medical treatment is often advised alongside surgery.
